The Dubai Metro

In early 2006 everyone was talking about Dubai’s next big project the Dubai Metro.  By mid 2006 the contruction works for the metro had already started. Dubai is an ever growing city, probably one of the fastest growing in the world today attracting millions of visitors each year. This could lead to increased Dubai Metrotraffic congestion in the near future, so the Dubai government came  up with the idea of Dubai Metro, the longest fully automated rail system in the world. The need for a Metro was felt in the year 1997, however, the project finally came into existence in the year 2005.

Currently there are planned to be around 40 different stations all around the city. These will be divided into a green line and  a red line. However, there are two more proposed lines known as the blue line and the purple line.

The projects of building the Dubai Metro has been awarded to some of the top Japanese Companies. This project is estimated to cost around $4.2 billion and will be completed successfully even in the midst of recession.

Dubai TrainOnce the metro will be in complete operation it is speculated that the Metro will carry around 1.2 million passengers per day on an average.

Also this will be the first metro in the world that will have corporate branding. 23 stations on the metro lines will be given names by corporate brands. Negotiations between the government officials and the corporations for the names are currently underway.

This project will greatly benefit Dubai’s traffic conditions and help enhance the infrastructure.  The Metro is planned to start functioning on the 9th of September 2009.

Dubai’s Major Infrastructure Projects

The vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktom of making Dubai a recognized global hub has become a reality. And now that position is to be renewed, as Dubai is investing in major multi-billion infrastructural projects.

Even in times of economic downturn, Dubai is steadily growing and evidence is clear. Dubai is investing in three important road projects which have recently been approved.

Dubai Roads
The Dubai government had already announced a 42 per cent increase in infrastructure spending in January, for the year 2009.

The initial work for one of the projects has been begun; however the other two will begin later this year. It is also said that the projects will meet the highest safety standards.

In addition there is another project underway, under the Dubai International Airport, Concourse 3, which happens to be the last major project of one of the eminent airports in the world.

Concourse 3 is expected to be completed by 2011. The lounges are said to be temperature controlled. After completion of this concourse the airport will consist of three terminals and three concourses.
Moreover, it is being said, work to expand the combined passenger capacity has also begun from the originally planned 190 million to 240 million, Dubai International and Dubai Central Airport.

Dubai International Airport will be seeing an expansion worth 15 million Dirhams, and the initial cost of development for Dubai Central Airport (officially to be known as Al Maktoum International Airport), will be 30 million Dirhams.

Maktoum Airport is said to be ten times the size of Dubai International Airport and Cargo Village combined. It is planned to be the world’s largest cargo hub.

It will have annual cargo of 12 million tons, more than three times the cargo of Memphis International Airport, currently the world’s largest cargo hub.

These major developments will reinstate Dubai’s position on the world map.
